East Coast Conversion

March 12th, 2012

The original house was a two-storey semi-detached dwelling sharing a gable with the neighbouring cottage to the North.
Its alignment forms a key part of the existing street line. To the South sits a substantial Victorian Villa. All three properties look out to sea at the rear.
From the sea side the existing property had been extended from its original form in a very utilitarian manner and as such no longer responded to its beautiful context. The house was a very dark property internally.
The reconfigured and extended building creates a light-filled interior maximising the sea views whilst accommodating the living requirements of a modern day family.
It was a requirement of the Planning Consent that the existing entrance elevation to the street was retained. Everything else was removed. In order to fulfill the client’s brief the accommodation was then split within the existing massing over three smaller levels to the rear instead of two. The overall building line was pulled back in line with the neighbouring cottage and an extended ground floor level added, angled to maximise the view towards the beach. The effect of this is to create a much more pleasant and useable garden for the house.
The finished building subtly bridges the gap between it’s contrasting neighbours. A small glazed summerhouse perches on the edge of the existing sea wall commanding great views of the harbour and sea beyond.
